  • In great anticipation of Jane’s answers to our interview questions sent last June, we are happy to share with you the latest of her interviews, published yesterday by Spanish site La Aventura es la Aventura.
Among other things, this time Jane has been asked some rather unusual questions about her past work.

  • Nico asked Anaconda DTP whether we well see Gray Matter showcased at this year's Game Conference in Leipzig.

Anaconda DTP answered that the Game Conference is a very important appointment to them, and that we can expect Gray Matter to be presented to the press with some new material, which might include new screenshots, as well as a trailer.
At this stage there still won't be any presentation to the public: gamers will be able to have a closer preview of the game when the official site will be launched.

  • Nico asked the GM producer a question regarding the screenshots:

It was told that the engine of the game mixes realtime with prerendered 3D. So Samantha here is realtime.. But is all of the environment prerendered (flat) or are parts of the environment realtime rendered as well, like for example trees moving outside in the wind, light that comes through a glass stained window and kind of "ripples"?

    Answer:

The backgrounds are all pre-rendered, but we have many realtime animations included (moving skybox, trees, light effects/strays, dust particles, etc etc) and we are using realtime lighting.

  • In an interview published online by Igromania, Jane Jensen confirmed that we would also visit London in GM. There will be altogether about 50 characters in the game and among them about 20 important for the plot. There are 800 pages of script already and she is still working on dialogues. We can probably expect some references to the Gabriel Knight series in GM (quotations? hints? easter eggs?). Jane mysteriously says: "Keep your eyes wide open!"

  • News about Gray Matter development:
    http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=1397

  • Fortunately, Jensen was able to announce at Leipzig Game Convention in 2006 that the title was under development with Tonuzaba Entertainment, and would be published by Anaconda Games. Currently slated for a 2008 release, Jensen comments that the game is “coming along nicely”.

“There’s always a rough period at the beginning when you’re getting the engine together and the basic process down, especially with a new team,” she muses. “But we’re past that and cranking through actual art and scripting now. There’s new stuff in the build each week. That’s when the game really begins. The art is terrific and we’re able to play through the first few chapters - and they’re fun!”

  • Anaconda DTP informed me today that Gray Matter will to their regret be delayed.

The new release date is Q1/2008. Gabriel Knight fans out there know all too well that it’s often hard to estimate when a game will be finished; this game will surely be no different.

We can in fact only rejoice over the fact that the company won’t bring out rushed unfinished products to reach their deadlines. So this is a good thing, really..

  • Some information from my contact at Anaconda DTP AG:
Estimates are that the Gray Matter Website will go live somewhere around April. There will be special features in the future (this might be a designer diary on a big adventure site), but there are no concrete plans yet. In a couple of months Anaconda's offices in Hamburg will have a preview copy they can show to the press, we can assume that the first previews on gaming sites will pop up then. Of course we'll keep you posted!

  • CORT-X will also feature two interviews with Jane Jensen and the Development Team later this year.
